General Settings and Setup Quick Start

For the experienced user:
If you already know your way around your TCP/IP, PPP, e-mail, and other Internet software and do not need detailed step-by-step setup instructions, the following should be enough to get you up and running. Not every software package will need every one of these settings.

Access Number  Click here for the list.
 Home Page  http://start.visionet.net
 Connection Type  PPP
DNS Server  Server Assigned (or 0.0.0.0)
 Domain  visionet.net
Login Name  username  (starts with vo or vn)
 Email Address  emailaddress@visionet.net
 Incoming (POP3) Mail Server  pop.visionet.net
 Outgoing (SMTP) Mail Server  mail.visionet.net
 News (NNTP) Server  news.rtmx.net
Your IP Address:
Assigned by server. Also known as "Automatic", "Dynamic" or "Negotiated". Use 0.0.0.0 if your software insists that you enter an IP address.

Host Name:
Optional. Leave blank, or enter your visionet.net username. This setting is meaningless in a PPP connection with a server-assigned IP address.

Domain Name:
visionet.net

Name Server (DNS):
Assigned by server. If your software insists on it, enter the following:

    64.40.82.10
    216.26.234.248

Dial up Phone Number:

Hardware Error Correction (modem-based error correction):
Normally should be enabled, but disabling error correction can sometimes help if you have connection reliability problems.

Hardware Compression (modem-based compression):
Normally should be enabled, but disabling compression can sometimes help if you have connection reliability problems.

TCP Header Compression:
Optional. Header compression is nearly useless with modern modems capable of hardware compression, and in some cases may even slow down your connections and/or decrease their reliability. Disable header compression if you experience connection problems.

Username (Login Name):
This will start with the letters VO or VN and was assigned when you signed up for service.

Password:
Was assigned when you signed up for service

E-Mail Settings
E-Mail Address:
Your primary email address would have been assigned when you signed up for service. For most customers this will be something@visionet.net. Some of our long time customers will have an email address with the domain ending in .ORG (example: something@visionet.ORG)

POP3 (Incoming Mail) Server:
If your address ends in .NET use:  pop.visionet.net
If your address ends in .ORG use:  pop.visionet.org

POP3 Account:
In most mail programs this is the first part of your email address, everything before the @ symbol. In some it is your full email address (example: jdoe@visionet.net).

SMTP (Outgoing Mail) Server:
If your address ends in .NET use:  mail.visionet.net
If your address ends in .ORG use:  mail.visionet.org

IMPORTANT: Set your mail program to remove mail from the server. How you do this depends on which mail program you use. Contact Visionet support if you need assistance.
